There are many things you can do to grow your practice, but what is often over-looked is “being dumb” by hiring smart.
You might be asking yourself if you are reading this right, you are. But hear me out.
It is a common belief in masterminding that you should always be around people that are much smarter than you are. If you get to that point where you have become the smartest one in the group, regardless of how great that feels and what an accomplishment that may be, it is a sign that it’s time to change groups and move on.
However, this concept doesn’t always translate to the dental office. All too often, the doctor has to be the ‘be all and end all.’ Doctors tell me that they need to ‘learn it first’ and then they will take it to the team, when in fact the learning of this new skill should have been delegated from the beginning.
This misconception actually creates a bottleneck effect in your success, which holds you back, keeping you small. Each team member should become an expert in their particular field so that you can benefit from their knowledge.

So essentially, when you hire, you should be looking for someone ‘smarter than you’ each time so that they can propel you to find your next level. Celebrate that fact and know that it is actually benefitting you, not hurting you. I tell my doctors that if a team member isn’t worth the investment in training to increase their office intelligence, then they aren’t contributing to your practice and you shouldn’t hire them.
