Dr. Ginger Bratzel talks about crisis, something that every dentist and every practice faces at some point, and how to get past it.
Every practice, every person, and every entrepreneur at some stage in your life, you will have crisis. It will happen more than once and it happens everywhere, it’s just part of the process.
Unfortunately, for a lot of people, that’s when they lose their momentum. They have things rolling and then something happens. Dentists across the country deal with situations where they may have personal or practice setbacks.
Although I am empathetic to these situations, unfortunately, these problems are not specific or special. Things happen to everyone to some degree at some time.
So what do you do with it? If you have systems in place already, when a crisis occurs, it won’t derail you if you are prepared.
If you look up the Chinese word for ‘crisis’, it is made up of two words or symbols. The first symbol is ‘danger’, and we can understand that, crises can be associated with danger. But the symbol that everyone always misses out on is the second one, ‘opportunity’.

So look at everything that you’ve got going on and see how this is an opportunity. How can you use this to make yourself a better person, a better doctor, or a better practice? It’s not the actual event that derails you; it’s what you do with the event and how you interpret it to decide what to do next.
Look at crises that have happened in your practice in the past and what you are worried about going forward. Is it about taking the next step? Is it about a bigger facility? Is it about bringing in another doctor? You’re living it in fear of the danger, but you need to be looking at the opportunity. Write down that opportunity and start focusing on that. That’s what is going to pull you through, and before you know it, you’ll be on the other side of it with a great story to tell, along with the tools and resources you need.
