To be successful in business, not just in dentistry, it is important that you are setting yourself apart from the competition. You can do this by creating your own, unique position and standing out in the competitive marketplace by creating signature, customer service levels. Within in this article, I’m going to share some real businesses and examples for you to model for your own dental practice.
I’ve spotlighted other businesses in the past, but now I want to focus on what the Whole Foods grocery chain does and what that means to your dental practice.
What is the Whole Foods Chain? What do they sell?
Whole Foods sells food; therefore they have a very tight margin in a very competitive industry.

How they set themselves apart is in the experience.
They have many of the same brands you can find somewhere else, and for cheaper, BUT they bring customers in by providing them with things that no one else can.
Their service departments like the bakery, deli, produce, floral and meat departments provide the staples, but they really concentrate on giving you unique items of a higher quality. They use pure ingredients and that comes through in the taste of their food.
They also have a large health product area to attract people for healthy living so their food items match that mentality.
On my latest visit, I saw something else that makes them unique. They are like no other grocery store and set themselves apart even with their restrooms. There was an elegant, silver-framed plaque on the counter that announced their concierge services. This is another up-sell opportunity to provide a service for those who are in need of assistance with shopping during special events and planning for business events, or even your weekly grocery list when you are short on time.
They saw a need and frustration and they filled it. I have a friend and business colleague in the travel industry that uses this level of services as a differentiating factor to position her business. She operates in the competitive Disney travel world. People can go online and do this themselves, but she provides all the concierge services at no added cost as her unique selling proposition and has been very successful at it.
So it’s time for you to step outside the box and find out what makes your practice stand apart from the rest.
